This is something we’re asked a lot by our customers because we have many people come to us interested in a powerful and sophisticated pickup, but they’re not sure which model out there is right for them. If you know you want the capabilities and design of a full-size truck, then you’ve narrowed things down to just a handful of options, but there are still some big decisions to make. So you might already be interested in a GMC Sierra 1500 for sale near Geneva, but still wondering if you’re making the right choice. Don’t worry because we’re here to answer this question and show you why so many people choose the Sierra 1500 over the Ram 1500 (and any other comparable model out there).

GMC Gives You a More Powerful Starting Engine

Both of these trucks have four different engines to choose from, giving you plenty of options and flexibility to get the kind of power you need. While we love that freedom when helping our customers find the perfect pickup, we know that the standard powertrain is preferred by a lot of Geneva drivers. That’s why starting engines are so important and why we love offering the 2026 GMC Sierra 1500 with its incredible standard engine, including best-in-class standard torque for a half-ton truck.

The 2026 Sierra 1500 starts with an incredible 2.7L TurboMax turbocharged I-4 engine that delivers 310 hp and 430 lb-ft of torque. You read that torque correctly, and it’s a massive advantage over many other trucks out there. The one exception to this is the Chevy Silverado 1500, of course, which shares a standard engine with this powerful GMC pickup. This is paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission, and you can choose between rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive, as you would expect.

Ever since GM introduced its TurboMax engine, we’ve seen every other truck manufacturer scramble to keep up—some have done so better than others. The 2026 Ram 1500 starts with a 3.6L Pentastar V6 engine, which uses a mild hybrid system to boost performance, but not to the level we’d like. This V6 provides 305 hp (pretty close to the GMC Sierra 1500, but not quite) and just 269 lb-ft of torque. The torque falls far behind what GMC gives you, and it’s a shame. While the available engines for the 2026 Ram 1500 improve its performance, we find that to be an easy feat, given where it starts with its modest standard engine.

Looking for a Diesel Engine? Stick to GM

As we said, both of these trucks have four engines available, and if you compare them, you’ll find many similarities between them. For example, the much-talked-about 3.0L Hurricane I-6 engine for the Ram 1500 offers 420 hp and 469 lb-ft of torque, which is nearly identical to GM’s 6.2L EcoTec3 V8 engine that delivers 420 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque. We prefer the reliability of this incredible engine that’s been in the GMC Sierra 1500 for many years now, but Ram has delivered something worth keeping an eye on with the Hurricane engine.

When looking at these four options, one thing should quickly become apparent: GMC gives you something that the Ram 1500 utterly lacks. With the 2026 GMC Sierra 1500, you can choose a 3.0L Duramax turbo-diesel engine with 495 lb-ft of torque, providing dependable diesel performance and robust capabilities (more on those capabilities in a moment). Ram doesn’t offer a diesel engine on the Ram 1500 at all; in fact, Ford similarly has dropped a diesel from the F-150 these days. So if you want a powerful and sophisticated light-duty truck with diesel reliability, then GM is the way to go.

GMC Delivers Far Superior Towing Capabilities

Horsepower and torque are important numbers when shopping for a truck because you want something with plenty of muscle that feels good as you drive around Geneva each day. That being said, actual capabilities can be even more important since you need a pickup that is ready to tackle what you have to do. That’s why things like payload and towing capacity are so important when shopping for a truck; while these two models are quite similar in terms of max payload, there’s a huge difference in towing.

Looking at the Ram 1500, its standard engine tops out at just 8,130 lbs of towing potential, which is fine but not amazing. The bigger problem is that the best the 2026 Ram 1500 can do is 11,610 lbs of max towing when properly equipped and configured. By comparison, the 2026 GMC Sierra 1500 with its standard engine can handle up to 9,500 lbs of towing when properly equipped. And with its available diesel engine, this beast delivers up to 13,300 lbs of max towing. That’s 14% greater towing than the Ram 1500, which is enough of a difference to affect your daily routine.

A Larger Bed and More Cargo Space With the Sierra 1500

Let’s say, for a moment, that you’re not that interested in towing and you instead prefer to load up your truck with stuff to take with you. Whether you need to get a bunch of lumber to jobsites around Geneva or you like to go camping on the weekend and need room for equipment, the bed of your truck is incredibly important. The Ram 1500 is offered with just two bed sizes: a 5.6-foot bed with 53.8 cu.ft. of cargo space and a 6.3-foot bed with 61.3 cu.ft. of cargo volume. By comparison, GMC gives you three different beds to choose from:

  • 5.8-Foot Bed: 62.9 cu.ft. of cargo space
  • 6.6-Foot Bed: 71.7 cu.ft. of cargo space
  • 8.2-Foot Bed: 89.1 cu.ft. of cargo space

You can see that each of those beds is larger than the comparable one from Ram, and you have a third option that’s far bigger than anything available with the Ram 1500. So if you’re looking to load up your truck bed with everything you need to take with you each day, the Sierra 1500 is simply a better option with much more room to utilize.

How About Hands-Free Driving With Towing Support?

Both of these trucks have a lot of impressive tech features, including large interior displays, remarkably comfortable seating, and more. But if you want to enjoy the cutting edge of truck technology, then you have to go with GMC. The 2026 Sierra 1500 is available with GM’s Super Cruise hands-free driving technology, one of the most impressive pieces of semi-autonomous driving tech in the industry. What’s more, Super Cruise is the only system like this that offers support for towing—no other hands-free system can safely haul a trailer. So you get an incredible piece of tech that can make long drives less tiring, and you can even use it while pulling a trailer, camper, or boat behind you.

All of This and Much More, at a Lower Price

With everything the GMC Sierra 1500 has going for it, you might expect it to cost more than Ram’s truck—especially given its superior standard engine. And yet, the 2026 Sierra 1500 starts at just $38,300 MSRP; by comparison, the 2026 Ram 1500 starts at $41,575 MSRP right now.[a] That’s a pretty big difference, and you’ll see it extend throughout the different trims, where you generally get more while spending less on the Sierra 1500. Whether you’re worried about your household budget or you want to keep costs down to maximize profits, getting more truck for less money is always a win.

See Why GMC Trucks Are Perfect for Geneva Drivers

At the end of the day, you can see that the 2026 GMC Sierra 1500 simply gives you more to enjoy and takes things further than the Ram 1500. We know that Ram can make a fine truck, and we’re happy to see they reversed course on the disastrous decision to eliminate their iconic HEMI V8 engine, but it seems clear that GMC better understands what truck drivers want. If you’re ready to see the Sierra 1500 and everything it offers for yourself, then we’re here at Fox Valley GMC to show you the truck you’ve been looking for.
