Is the Terrain the Right GMC SUV for You?

The GMC Terrain is an interesting model in the GMC lineup because, well, it’s small. GMC is known for its big vehicles, like its full-size SUVs and pickup trucks. Typically, a GMC vehicle has a rather commanding presence. You won’t find any GMCs in the compact car parking spots, for example, or winding down narrow streets. So, the addition of the compact Terrain to the family in 2010 was a bit of a surprise for everyone. However, drivers came around to it quickly enough, even if it was the smallest option in its family. We welcome tons of customers asking if we have a GMC Terrain for sale on a regular basis.

You might be wondering how the Terrain holds up against its bigger siblings. It definitely offers a very distinct experience for drivers compared to the larger SUVs—namely the Acadia and the Yukon. There isn’t even a midsize SUV in the GMC family right now, so there’s a big jump from the Terrain up to the larger SUV options. However, its distinct nature is what makes it such a great member of the GMC family: it makes this high-quality, durable lineup of vehicles accessible to a new type of driver. Let’s take a look at how the Terrain differs from the larger GMC SUVs.

Passenger Space

The Terrain has five seats across two rows. This is the only seating configuration available for the Terrain. The Terrain is a great choice if you are a professional looking for a commuter vehicle, a couple with no kids, or a single person looking for a great vehicle that you’ll sometimes have friends in.

Drivers who need seating for more than five passengers will need to move up to the Acadia or the Yukon. The Acadia offers three rows and seating for up to seven passengers. Its standard configuration has captain’s chairs in the second row for greater comfort.

Drivers who need more seats can check out the Yukon. You can order it with second-row captain chairs for seating for seven or second-row bench seats for seating for eight. You can even get the Yukon with a front-row bench seat for up to nine passengers.

The Terrain is not meant to be a people hauler by any means. That’s what the Yukon and Acadia are for. The Terrain is a straightforward five-seater that can fit friends and family when needed.

Trim Options

All of the GMC SUVs can be ordered in different trims, catering to a range of driving styles and needs. There is some overlap between the trim lineup of the Terrain, the Acadia, and the Yukon for the 2024 model year, as well as some important differences.

All three SUVs—the Terrain, Acadia, and Yukon—have the off-road-ready AT4 and the luxury Denali trims. That’s where the overlap ends. For a quick rundown of the Terrain’s trims, it has the base-level SLE, the SLT, which builds on the SLE with more comfort and convenience features like a heated steering wheel and fold-front flat seat, the off-road-ready AT4 with a traction selection system and all-wheel drive, and the luxury Denali with perks like a Bose sound system and head-up display.

The Acadia has more limited options. It keeps things simple, with three trims boasting strong identities, including its base-level Elevation (which is distinctly more upscale than the Terrain’s base-level SLE), the off-road AT4, and the luxury Denali. Meanwhile, the Yukon boasts a larger range of trims, starting with an SLE sibling to the Terrain that offers a stripped-down option and going all the way up the Denali Ultimate, upping the luxury features even more than the standard Denali.

To sum it up, the Terrain sticks to more basic trim options, plus the AT4 and Denali. The Yukon sits on the other end of the spectrum with a broad range of trims as the only GMC SUV with the super-high-end Denali Ultimate while still offering the SLE, and the Acadia keeps things simple with three strong trim personalities.

Ground Clearance

Ground clearance will indicate what sort of terrain you can travel over because it puts space between the surface of the ground and the undercarriage of your vehicle. So, how does the Terrain compare to the Acadia and Yukon in this department?

The Terrain actually has some impressive maximum ground clearance for a compact SUV, offering up to 7.9 inches of space beneath its belly in all but the SLE trim. The Acadia has up to 7.75 inches in the AT4 trim but only 6.77 inches in the Elevation trim. The Yukon outshines the others here, with up to 10 inches of ground clearance when equipped with its optional air suspension. However, it only has eight inches otherwise. So, for a small SUV, the Terrain gives drivers a nice height.

If you want full-size ground clearance in a compact SUV, the Terrain is a great choice.

Towing Capacities

It’s important to know how much your vehicle can tow if you plan on taking it camping, boating, ATVing, or on similar activities. The Terrain has just 1,500 lbs of towing power. So it’s okay for outdoor adventure hobbyists, but it won’t be able to pull any large vehicles.

Alternatively, the Acadia can tow 5,000 lbs, and the Yukon can tow up to 8,400 lbs. So, across the three, you have pretty clear small, medium, and large towing abilities. Which one is right for you really depends on what you need to drag behind your vehicle.

Fuel Efficiency

This is where the Terrain really shines, and that is why GMC added it to the lineup. The Terrain has car-like dimensions and a peppy 1.5L I-4 engine. That gets it an EPA-estimated 26 MPG combined for the 2024 model year. You will see a significant drop in fuel economy when you move up to the Acadia or the Yukon.

Drivers who want rugged features like available all-wheel drive, some towing abilities, and good ground clearance, all wrapped up in a fuel-efficient model, should check out the Terrain. Whether you spend your time on freeways, city streets, or a bit of both, the Terrain won’t land you at the pump too often. The other vehicles are larger and stronger, but they pay for it in fuel economy.
